Assistant principal and educator Hidesh Bhardwaj shares how he's managing stress during the Alberta teachers' strike through exercise, connection, and acts of kindness.
I used to be a gratitude journal hater and I know many people who still are. I didn’t understand how going through a list of things I “should” be grateful for was helpful and on the days where I drew a total blank, I felt like a horrible human. It was not a helpful exercise for me — until I began to practice mindfulness.
The unknown is something our brains were never designed to handle easily. We crave predictability because it helps us feel prepared — and preparation offers a sense of control, even if that control is only imagined.
Transitioning back to school can be challenging for both parents and children, but DBT skills like mindfulness, validation, radical acceptance, checking the facts, and self-soothing can help parents stay emotionally regulated and support their children effectively.
